A detailed guide to getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg or Vienna

Hallstatt - the postcard photo

I'm sure many of you have heard of Hallstatt or have seen that postcard photo somewhere before. You want to get there to check out that famous place and wonder how to get there? Look no further as I have a detailed guide for you.

You can get to Hallstatt from Salzburg (the closest city to Hallstatt) or Vienna

Travel by car

Driving is the quickest and most convenient as you don't need to rely on public transport. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Salzburg or 3.5 hours from Vienna. There are a few parking lots in the town. It's a small village so I suggest you get there early in the morning to secure a space close to the town centre.

Travel by train

This is the most scenic way to get to Hallstatt although it takes the longest. Take the train from either Salzburg or Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim. From Attnang-Puchheim take a connecting train via Bad Ischl to Hallstatt station. Once you get off the train, you will find yourself on the other side of the lake and need to take a short ferry ride to the town

In summary:

From Salzburg:

  • Train from Salzburg to Attnang - Puchheim: 50 mins

  • Train from Attnang - Puchheim to Hallstatt: 90 mins

  • Ferry to the village: 10 mins

  • Total: 150 mins (2.5 hours)

From Vienna

  • Train from Vienna to Attnang - Puchheim: 140 mins

  • Attnang - Puchheim to Hallstatt: 90 mins

  • Ferry to the village: 10 mins

  • Total: 240 mins (4 hours)

You can find the train timetable in here

The ferry time will match the train arrival time hence you won't have to wait long for the ferry. Make sure to check the last ferry time if you don't stay overnight.

Travel by bus (from Salzburg only)

From Salzburg, take bus 150 from the bus station to Bad Ischi. The ride is around 90 mins. Once you reach Bad Ischi, you can take the train and ferry (see above). Alternatively you can ride bus 542 to Hallstatt Gosaumühle, which takes about about 20 mins. When you get there, you will need to do a quick transfer to bus 543 which will take you to Hallstatt’s main bus stop called the Hallstatt Lahn in about 10 mins.

In summary:

Option 1: Bus + train:

  • Bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl: 90 mins

  • Train from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt: 30 mins

  • Ferry to the village: 10 mins

  • Total: 130 mins ( 2 hours 10 mins)

Option 2: Bus only:

  • Bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl: 90 mins

  • Bus 542 to Hallstatt Gosaumühle : 20 mns

  • Bus 543 to Hallstatt Lahn: 10 mins

  • Total: 120 mins ( 2 hours)

Bus 542 and 543 are scheduled to allow enough time for passenger to change so do not worry about not having enough time. See the bus timetable below to plan your travels

Bus 542 and 542 timetable: see here

As you can see, if you travel by public transport, bus is the quickest. If you plan to go there for a day trip, make sure you get there as early as possible to maximise your time. Public service is less frequent during the weekend, especially on a Sunday. If you happen to travel during the weekend, make sure to do your homework and plan your time.
